Preparing tacos – Pakistani style – is always a great idea. This time I prepared my spicy beef strips with extra spices and herbs. The use of various spices will bring your tacos to the next level.
Ingredients:
6-8 white flour tortillas (8 inches) or flatbread
For taco’s beef filling
1-pound topside beef stack, cut into strips
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon garlic and ginger paste
1 teaspoon paprika powder
1 teaspoon all-spice powder
2 tablespoons green papaya paste
1 tablespoon roasted combination of spice powder (1 teaspoon cumin seeds, 1 teaspoon raw coriander, and 2 teaspoons crushed red chili flakes; combine and roast on low flame, then grind into a powdered form)
1 tablespoon sour cream or yogurt
½ teaspoon nutmeg powder
½ teaspoon mace powder
1 tablespoon roasted chickpea powder, roasted skinless (or roasted ‘besan’)
1 tablespoon crispy fried onions (or ready-made fried onions), crushed
½ cup oil (to pan-fry beef strips)
Salt according to taste
1 cup tomatillos and avocado sauce
For salsa filling (optional):
1 fresh onion, medium-sized, finely chopped
1 fresh tomato, medium-sized, finely chopped
1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, finely chopped
Avocado, thinly sliced
Pomegranate seeds
2-3 lime wedges
Salt according to taste
Method:
Wash the beef strips in cold water. Then pat and dry with paper towels. Generously coat beef strips in lemon juice. Set aside for an hour.
Tip: This process helps make the beef strips moist.
In a large bowl, combine the roasted combination of spice powder, all-spice powder, nutmeg, mace, paprika powder, garlic and ginger paste, papaya paste, crushed golden fried onions, salt, and sour cream to make a smooth mixture.
Coat the beef strips with the paste, and set aside to marinate for 2-3 hours in the refrigerator.
Heat oil in a heavy-bottom pan over medium heat. Then lay the beef in a single layer in the pan (do not over-crowd). Reduce the heat and fry the beef on low heat until it turns golden brown. Set aside.
Assembling:
To assemble, half fill warm tortillas (or flatbread) with fried beef strips at the center. Then add the onion, avocado, and pomegranate. Top it up with a small amount of the tomatillos & avocado, and your favorite sauce. Fold the sides of the tacos carefully to keep the fillings enclosed.
